Millions of people have had extraordinary moments while running this 1.58 mile track in Central Park every year.

But the Reservoir Running Track wasn’t always as it is today.

Since 1926, the view of the Reservoir and cityscape was obscured by a seven-foot-high chain-link fence.

In 2003, after a piece of the original fence was found in the Reservoir by scuba divers, Central Park Conservancy undertook a $2 million project to install a replica of the original 8,170-foot fence. Using artisans and 19th-century iron-working techniques, the Conservancy was able to design and fabricate a close facsimile of the steel and cast iron original. At just four feet high, the new fence and the removal of non-native and invasive shrubs and trees, offered improved views and a better experience for runners and visitors.

TODAY, WITH YOUR HELP, CENTRAL PARK CONSERVANCY IS REPAVING THE ENTIRE TRACK, IMPROVING DRAINAGE FROM ITS SURFACE, AND EXPANDING THE CREW RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAINING THE TRACK IN ORDER TO SUSTAIN THESE IMPROVEMENTS.

Keeping the track fit is just part of Central Park Conservancy’s mission to restore, manage, and enhance this spectacular landscape.
