In 2003, after a piece of the original fence was found in the Reservoir by scuba divers,
Central Park Conservancy undertook a $2 million project to install a replica of the original 8,170-foot fence. Using artisans and 19th-century iron-working techniques, the Conservancy was able to design and fabricate a close facsimile of the steel and cast iron original. At just four feet high, the new fence and the removal of non-native and invasive shrubs and trees, offered improved views and a better experience for runners and visitors.
